This product is intended as a total diet replacement for the dietary management of overweight and obesity. The Optifast Program is designed for individuals who are obese or overweight, particularly those with associated secondary health issues such as non-insulin-dependent diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism (corrected by replacement therapy), gynaecological disorders, hyperlipidaemia, or when obesity is an impediment to surgery. Very low energy diets are not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, infants, children, adolescents, and the elderly. Individuals over 65 years and those with existing medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before use. This very low energy diet should not be used by people with acute heart disease, advancing renal disease, advanced hepatic disease, or overt psychosis.

Precautions:
Individuals with recent myocardial infarction should consult a cardiologist to determine suitability for modified fasting. Those receiving medication for diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, or on lithium therapy may require dose adjustments while undergoing modified fasting. Close monitoring is recommended in the initial weeks of the Optifast VLCD Program. Individuals with a history of gout, porphyria, or hepatic, renal, or gall bladder disease should also be closely monitored by their healthcare professional. Alcohol consumption should be avoided during the Optifast VLCD Program.
Monitoring:
At the start of the program, individuals should have their renal and hepatic function checked, followed by regular monitoring of weight, blood pressure, and urinalysis by their doctor.
Adverse Reactions:
Initial transient effects may include sensitivity to cold, dry skin, temporary rash, temporary hair loss, postural hypotension, fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, muscle cramps, halitosis, irritability, and menstrual disturbances. These effects are generally not severe enough to require stopping the program, but it is advisable to check with your GP if symptoms occur. In rare cases, numbness and gallstone formation have been reported. Rapid weight loss can occasionally lead to higher serum uric acid levels, which may precipitate gout attacks in predisposed individuals. Adequate fluid intake and including a teaspoon of vegetable oil with two cups of additional vegetables consumed daily can help manage this. Always consult a doctor for any adverse symptoms. Although the Optifast VLCD Program contains adequate electrolytes for most individuals, some may experience hyponatremia or hypokalemia, especially if on diuretics. In such cases, electrolyte supplements may be necessary as directed by your healthcare professional.

Directions:
Add one sachet of Optifast VLCD to 200-250 mL of cold or warm water. Stir, blend, or shake to dissolve. Do not use boiling water. All prepared products should be tightly covered and consumed within 4 hours at room temperature or within 24 hours if refrigerated. Discard any unfinished product that has been heated.
