SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability
Rating: Low to Moderate
Actives:
- Homosalate
(10%): A synthetic UV filter that can have moderate
environmental concerns, particularly regarding its potential toxicity to
aquatic life. Its production may involve fossil fuels, contributing to lower
sustainability.
- Octocrylene
(8%): A synthetic compound used as a UV filter and
stabilizer in sunscreens. It is biodegradable, but there are concerns about its
environmental impact, particularly on coral reefs and aquatic ecosystems, as it
may be harmful to marine life.
- Octyl
Salicylate (5%): A chemical UV filter that can
be derived from natural or synthetic sources. While effective, it is associated
with potential environmental toxicity, particularly regarding its impact on
aquatic environments.
- Butyl
Methoxydibenzoylmethane (4%) (also known as Avobenzone):
A broad-spectrum UV filter known for its stability but is synthetically
produced. Concerns regarding its bioaccumulation and potential impact on
aquatic life can affect its sustainability rating.
- Phenoxyethanol:
A synthetic preservative that is effective in small concentrations. While it is
considered low in toxicity, it is not readily biodegradable, raising concerns
about its environmental impact.
Preservatives:
- Hydroxybenzoates:
These synthetic preservatives (like methylparaben, ethylparaben, etc.) are
effective but have raised concerns about their potential impact on hormone
disruption and environmental persistence. They are not biodegradable,
contributing to lower sustainability ratings.
- Benzyl Alcohol (0.5%): A natural or synthetic preservative that is generally considered safe and has a low environmental impact. However, its sustainability depends on sourcing practices; synthetic versions may have a higher environmental footprint.
