SUSTAINABILITY
Rating:
Low to Moderate
- Homosalate
(8% w/w): Derived from petrochemicals, it has a low
sustainability rating due to its environmental persistence and potential harm
to coral reefs and marine life.
- Octocrylene
(6% w/w): A petrochemical-based sunscreen filter,
Octocrylene is linked to reef bleaching and aquatic toxicity, giving it a low
sustainability rating.
- Octyl
Salicylate (5% w/w): This UV filter is also
petroleum-derived, with moderate environmental persistence. Its sustainability
rating is low to medium.
- Butyl
Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) (3.5% w/w):
Derived from petroleum, Avobenzone breaks down in sunlight, releasing
potentially harmful byproducts. Sustainability rating is low to medium.
- Ethylhexyl
Triazone (1.3% w/w): Though petroleum-based, this
UV filter is relatively photostable and doesn’t bioaccumulate as much in
aquatic environments, giving it a medium sustainability rating.
- Bemotrizinol (1.0% w/w): A broad-spectrum, stable UV filter that is less water-soluble, reducing its environmental impact. Sustainability rating is medium.
- Phenoxyethanol:
A partially biodegradable preservative that can be toxic to aquatic life in
high concentrations. Sustainability rating is medium.
- Alkyl
(C12-C15) Benzoate: Often derived from
petrochemicals, it has moderate environmental persistence but is generally safe
for human use. Its sustainability rating is low to medium.
