SUSTAINABILITY
Rating:
Moderate
- Water
(Aqua): Widely available, but excessive use in formulations
can strain water resources.
- Carthamus
Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil: Plant-based, renewable, and
biodegradable. The impact depends on farming practices (e.g., water use,
pesticide application).
- Petrolatum
(Soft White Paraffin): Derived from petroleum, a
non-renewable resource. However, its production has lower toxicity compared to
other petroleum-based products.
- Glycerin:
Often plant-derived and biodegradable. Synthetic
glycerin has a lower sustainability rating due to its petroleum base.
- Sodium
Laureth Sulfate (SLES): Derived from palm oil (linked to
deforestation unless sustainably sourced) or petroleum. Biodegradability is
moderate, but it may accumulate in water systems.
- Lauryl
Betaine: Amphoteric surfactant; usually biodegradable and
less harmful to aquatic life. Impact depends on sourcing (e.g., coconut or palm
oil).
- Xanthan
Gum: Biodegradable and derived from natural fermentation
of sugars.
- Guar
Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride: Plant-derived (guar gum) but
modified. Biodegradable but with a mild environmental processing impact.
- Tocopherol
(Vitamin E): Derived from plant oils,
renewable and biodegradable. Sourcing practices matter.
- Methylparaben
and Propylparaben: Petroleum-derived.
Biodegradability is controversial, and there are concerns about persistence in
the environment.
- Sodium
Polyacrylate: A synthetic polymer that is not
biodegradable and contributes to microplastic pollution.
- Citric
Acid: Naturally derived from fermentation, biodegradable,
and environmentally friendly.
- Sodium
Lauroyl Lactylate: Derived from natural sources,
biodegradable, and relatively low environmental impact.
- Ceramide
EOP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide NP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol: Often
synthetic or derived from animal/plant sources. Biodegradability varies, and
synthetic versions can have a higher environmental footprint.
- Ethylhexylglycerin: Derived
from natural sources, biodegradable, and low toxicity.
- Carbomer: Synthetic
polymer, not biodegradable, and contributes to microplastic pollution.
